NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS DEPARTURES
UP 4% IN SEPTEMBER QUARTER OF 2007

Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 4%, or 20,000 trips, in the third quarter of 2007, with "holiday" and "business" travel up 1% and "VFR" departures up 9%; travel overseas for "other reasons" rose by 6% in the three months ended September.

In total, New Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.94 million in the year ended September 2007 - an increase of 76,522 departures or 4% on the year ended September 2006. "Holiday" travel grew by more than 20,000 departures or 3% in the twelve month period, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 7% (40,000 trips) and "business" travel up 3%; departures for "other" reasons also increased by 3% in the year ended September 2007.

By top ten "countries of main destination", New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 3% in the September quarter, with departures to Fiji down by a further 17% and travel to the United Kingdom and the United States up 12% and 8% respectively. Travel to the Cook Islands rose by 6% in the three month period, with departures to China up 23% and to Samoa up 25%. 

Total New Zealand departures to Thailand increased by 8% in the third quarter, with departures to France up 101% and to Japan up 16%.Overseas travel from the provincial markets of Central Auckland and Canterbury increased by 4% in the September quarter, with departures from the Waikato/Bay of Plenty region up 8%. Departures from the Wellington and Northland markets rose by 2% in the three month period, with travel from Otago/Southland up 5% and from Nelson/Marlborough/Westland up 6%.

Overseas departures from the East Coast/Hawkes Bay region increased by just 1% in the third quarter of the year while travel from Taranaki declined by 3%.
