Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 6,482 trips or 3% in the month of September 2007. "Holiday" travel rose by 3%, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 4% and "business" travel up by 1%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.94 million departures in the year ended September 2007 - up by 76,522 departures, or 4% on the same twelve month period of the previous year. "Holiday" travel grew by 3% in the year ended September 2007, with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 7% and 3% respectively.

By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2006 calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by just 0.4% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down by a further 17% and to the United Kingdom up 26%. Travel to the United States rose by less than 1% in the month of September, with departures to China up 26% and to the Cook Islands and Samoa up 4% and 17% respectively. New Zealand travel to Thailand declined by 10% in the month of September, with departures to India down 26% and to Hong Kong up 27%.

New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of main destination", fell by 2% in the month of September 2007, with departures to Asia down 9% and to Fiji down 20%. Travel to the "other" South Pacific Islands for "holiday" reasons increased by 13% in the month under review, with departures to (World Ruby Cup influenced) Europe up 57% and to North America up 8%.. "Holiday" travel to the "other" Americas rose by 28% in September 2007, with departures to Africa and the Middle East down 10%. Total overseas departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 815,391 in the year ended September 2007 - up by 3% on the year ended September 2006.
