NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 3% IN SEPTEMBER 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by a 6,400 trips or
3% in the month of September 2006. "Holiday" travel rose by
7%, with departures for "VFR" reasons down 2% and
"business" travel up 0.2%. In total, New Zealand overseas
travel was recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended September 2006 -
up by nearly 18,000 departures or 1% - on the same twelve month period
of the previous year. "Holiday" travel fell by less than 200
departures in the 2006 September year, with departures for "VFR"
and "business" reasons up 3%.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 3% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji up 10% and to the United
States up 4%. Travel to the United Kingdom declined by 7% in the month
of September, with departures to China up 5% and to the Cook Islands up
7%. New Zealand travel to Thailand fell by 9% in the month of September,
with departures to Samoa and India up 11% and 59% respectively, with
travel to Hong Kong down 18%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", rose by 9% in the month of September 2006, with
departures to North America and Asia up 15% and 7% respectively. Travel
to Europe for "holiday" reasons declined by 12% in the month
under review, with departures to Fiji up 7% and to the "other"
South Pacific Islands up 21%. "Holiday" travel to the
"other" Americas grew by 51% in September, with departures to
Africa and the Middle East up 5%. Total overseas departures for
"holiday" reasons were recorded at 795,161 in the year ended
September 2006 - virtually unchanged from the September year 2005
result.
