NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
DOWN 6% IN OCTOBER 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents declined by a 8,900 trips or 6%
in the month of October 2006. "Holiday" travel fell by 13%,
with departures for "VFR" reasons unchanged and
"business" travel up 6%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel
was recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended October 2006 - down by
more than 2,100 departures or 0.1% - on the same twelve month period of
the previous year. "Holiday" travel declined by 2% in the
October year 2006, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 2% and 3% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia fell by 7% in the month
under review, with departures to Fiji down 13% and to the United States
down 3%. Travel to the United Kingdom declined by 5% in the month of
October, with departures to China up 11% and to the Cook Islands up 23%.
New Zealand travel to Thailand rose by 6% in the month of October, with
departures to Samoa and India up 19% and 11% respectively, and travel to
Hong Kong down 15%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", declined by 16% in the month of October 2006,
with departures to North America and Europe down 15% and 14%
respectively. Travel to Asia for "holiday" reasons rose by 2%
in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 18% and to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 17%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas grew by 72% in October, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 13%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 785,777 in
the year ended October 2006 - down 2% on the year ended October 2005.
