NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 2% IN NOVEMBER 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 3,450 trips or 2%
in the month of November 2006. "Holiday" travel rose by just
0.3%, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 8% and
"business" travel down 3%. In total, New Zealand overseas
travel was recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended November 2006 - up
by more than 5,500 departures or 0.3% - on the same twelve month period
of the previous year. "Holiday" travel declined by 2% in the
November year 2006, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 3% and 2% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 12% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji down 14% and to the United
States down 11%. Travel to the United Kingdom declined by 21% in the
month of November, with departures to China down 8% and to the Cook
Islands up 7%. New Zealand travel to Thailand fell by 5% in the month of
November, with departures to Samoa up 21% and travel to India and Hong
Kong down 20% and 3% respectively.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", increased by 16% in the month of November 2006,
with departures to North America and Europe down 23% and 10%
respectively. Travel to Asia for "holiday" reasons fell by 19%
in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 29% and to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 9%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas declined by 23% in November,
with departures to Africa and the Middle East up 53%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 785,926 in
the year ended November 2006 - down 2% on the year ended November 2005.
