NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 16% IN MAY 2007
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 23,254 trips or
16% in the month of May 2007. "Holiday" travel increased by
20%, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 25% and
"business" travel up 1%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel
was recorded at 1.9 million departures in the year ended May 2007 - up
by 32,000 departures, or 2% on the same twelve month period of the
previous year. "Holiday" travel rose by just 0.4% in the year
ended May 2007, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 4% and 2% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2006
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 17% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji down 9% and to the United
Kingdom up 7%. Travel to the United States rose by 13% in the month of
May, with departures to China and the Cook Islands up 35% and to Samoa
up 34%. New Zealand travel to Thailand grew by 9% in the month of May,
with departures to India up 38% and to Hong Kong up 31%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", increased by 19% in the month of May 2007, with
departures to Asia up 33% and to Europe up 17%. Travel to Fiji for
"holiday" reasons declined by 3% in the month under review,
with departures to North America up 8% and to the "other"
South Pacific Islands up 38%. "Holiday" travel to the
"other" Americas fell by 36% in May, with departures to Africa
and the Middle East up 5%. Total overseas departures for
"holiday" reasons were recorded at 803,336 in the year ended
May 2007 - up by 0.4% on the year ended May 2006.
