NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 1% IN MAY 2006
Overseas
travel by New Zealand residents increased by nearly 1,600 trips or 1% in
the month of May 2006. While the April 2006 monthly gain was "VFR"
influenced, the May 2006 increase was very much "business"
influenced, with this segment of the market up 6% on May 2005, while
departures for "holiday" and "business" travel fell
by 0.2% and 0.3% respectively. In total, New Zealand overseas travel was
recorded at 1.87 million in the year ended May 2006 - up by 66,225
departures or 4% - on the same twelve month period of the previous year.
"Holiday" travel rose by 3% with departures for "VFR"
and "business" reasons up 5% and 7% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by less than
1% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji up 10% and to the
United States down 18%. Travel to the United Kingdom and China rose by
3% and 4% respectively in the month of May, with departures to the Cook
Islands up 6% and to Thailand up 36%. New Zealand travel to Samoa
increased by 24% with departures to India down 17% and to Hong Kong down
3%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", fell by 0.3% in the month of May 2006, with
departures to Europe and North America down 4% and 13% respectively.
Travel to Asia for "holiday" reasons increased by just 1% in
the month under review, with departures to Fiji and the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 11%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas increased by 83% in May, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 6%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 799,778 in
the year ended May 2006 - up 3% on the May year 2005.
