NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 7% IN MARCH 2007
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 9,018 trips or 7%
in the month of March 2007. "Holiday" travel increased by 9%,
with departures for "VFR" reasons up 8% and
"business" travel up 6%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel
was recorded at 1.88 million in the year ended March 2007 - up by nearly
13,000 departures or 0.7% - on the same twelve month period of the
previous year. "Holiday" travel declined by 1% in the year
ended March 2007, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 3% and 2% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2006
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 4% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji up 12% and to the United
Kingdom down 1%. Travel to the United States fell by 3% in the month of
March, with departures to China up 31% and to the Cook Islands up 8%.
New Zealand travel to Samoa rose by 19% in the month of March, with
departures to Thailand up 31% and to India and Hong Kong up 20% and 27%
respectively.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", declined by 4% in the month of March 2007, with
departures to Europe and Fiji up 9% and 15% respectively. Travel to Asia
for "holiday" reasons rose by 35% in the month under review,
with departures to North America up 33% and to the "other"
South Pacific Islands up 54%. "Holiday" travel to the
"other" Americas increased by 167% in March, with departures
to Africa and the Middle East up 420%. Total overseas departures for
"holiday" reasons were recorded at 790,551 in the year ended
March 2007 - down 1% on the year ended March 2006.
