NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
DOWN 9% IN MARCH 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents declined by more
than 11,500 trips or 9% in the month of March 2006. "Holiday"
and "VFR" travel fell by 14% and 10% respectively, with
departures for "business" reasons up 7%. In total, New Zealand
overseas travel was recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended March
2006 - up by 86,063 departures or 5% - on the same twelve month period
of the previous year. "Holiday" travel was up 4% with
departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 6%
and 9% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia declined by
9% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 8% and
to the United States down 3%. Travel to the United Kingdom
rose by 3% in the month of March, with departures to China up 13%
and to the Cook Islands and Thailand up 12% and 9%
respectively. New Zealand travel to Samoa increased by 51%
with departures to India and Hong Kong down 9% and 24%
respectively.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", fell by 11% in the month of March 2006, with
departures to Asia down 12% and to North America and Fiji down 17% and
21% respectively. Travel to Europe for "holiday" reasons
declined by 24% in the month under review, with departures to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 6%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas increased by 5% in March, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 73%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 808,664 in
the year ended March 2006 - up 4% on the March year 2005.
