NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 11% IN JUNE 2007
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 19,893 trips or
11% in the month of June 2007. "Holiday" travel increased by
11%, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 12% and
"business" travel up 6%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel
was recorded at 1.92 million departures in the year ended June 2007 - up
by 36,200 departures, or 2% on the same twelve month period of the
previous year. "Holiday" travel rose by less than 1% in the
year ended June 2007, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 4% and 2% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2006
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by
12% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down a
further 10% and to the United Kingdom up 12%. Travel to the United
States grew by just 0.6% in the month of June, with departures to China
down 6% and to the Cook Islands up 21% and to Samoa
up 15%. New Zealand travel to Thailand rose by 2% in the month of
June, with departures to India up 16% and to Hong Kong
down 16%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as
"area of main destination", increased by 17% in the month
of June 2007, with departures to Asia down 3% and to North America down
4%. Travel to Fiji for "holiday" reasons declined by 7% in the
month under review, with departures to Europe up 9% and to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 4%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas fell by 36% in June, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East up 5%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 812,183 in
the year ended June 2007 - up by 0.7% on the year ended June 2006.
