NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 9% IN JUNE 2006

Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by nearly 15,700 trips or 9% in the month of June 2006. "Holiday" travel increased by 9%, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 11% and "business" travel up 7%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.88 million in the year ended June 2006 - up by 78,353 departures or 4% - on the same twelve month period of the previous year. "Holiday" travel grew by 4% in the 2006 June year, with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 6% and 7% respectively.

By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005 calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 3% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 2% and to the United States up 11%. Travel to the United Kingdom rose by 39% in the month of June, with departures to China up 15% and to the Cook Islands up 10%. New Zealand travel to Thailand and Samoa increased by 62% and 69% respectively, while departures to India fell by 0.1% and to Hong Kong by 6%.


New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of main destination", grew by 2% in the month of June 2006, with departures to Europe and Asia up 29% and to North America up 14%. Travel to Fiji for "holiday" reasons declined by 2% in the month under review, with departures to the "other" South Pacific Islands up 23%. "Holiday" travel to the "other" Americas increased by 66% in June, with departures to Africa and the Middle East up 96%. Total overseas departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 806,594 in the year ended June 2006 - up 4% on the June year 2005.
