NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
DOWN 9% IN JULY 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents declined by more than 18,700
trips or 9% in the month of July 2006. "Holiday" travel fell
by 11%, with departures for "VFR" reasons down 10% and
"business" travel up 1%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel
was recorded at 1.87 million in the year ended July 2006 - up by 37,781
departures or 2% - on the same twelve month period of the previous year.
"Holiday" travel rose by 1% in the 2006 July year, with
departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 3%
and 6% respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia declined by 8% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji down 3% and to the United
States down 17%. Travel to the United Kingdom fell by 10% in the month
of July, with departures to China down 29% and to the Cook Islands down
10%. New Zealand travel to Thailand was unchanged in the month of July,
with departures to Samoa down 14% and to India up 30% while travel to
Hong Kong declined by 28%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", fell by 12% in the month of July 2006, with
departures to North America and Asia down 30% and 13% respectively.
Travel to Europe for "holiday" reasons increased by 8% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji down 9% and to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 1%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas declined by 36% in July, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 28%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 795,646 in
the year ended July 2006 - up 1% on the July year 2005.
