NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 1% IN JANUARY 2007
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by
1,374 trips or 1% in the month of January 2007. "Holiday"
travel fell by a further 3%, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 2% and 9% respectively. In total, New
Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended
January 2007 - down by more than 15,000 departures or 1% - on the same
twelve month period of the previous year. "Holiday" travel
declined by 3% in the year ended January year 2007, with departures for
"VFR" reasons up 1% and "business" departures up 2%.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2006
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by
3% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 10%
and to the United Kingdom up 15%. Travel to the United States
rose by 7% in the month of January, with departures to China down
16% and to the Cook Islands up 23%. New Zealand
travel to Samoa grew by 7% in the month of January, with
departures to Thailand and India up 4% and 20%
respectively and to Hong Kong down 44%.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as
"area of main destination", increased by 4% in the month of
January 2007, with departures to North America and Fiji down 10% and 12%
respectively. Travel to Asia for "holiday" reasons declined by
25% in the month under review, with departures to Europe up 14% and to
the "other" South Pacific Islands up 24%.
"Holiday" travel to the "other" Americas declined by
15% in January, with departures to Africa and the Middle East also down
15%. Total overseas departures for "holiday" reasons were
recorded at 782,670 in the year ended January 2007 - down 3% on the year
ended January 2006.
