NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 10% IN JANUARY 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by nearly 9,700
trips or 10% in the month of January 2006. "Holiday" and
"VFR" travel rose by 11%, with departures for
"business" reasons up 14%. In total, New Zealand overseas
travel was recorded at 1.88 million in the year ended January 2006 - up
by 129,847 departures or 7% - on the same twelve month period of the
previous year. "Holiday" travel was up 6% with departures for
"VFR" and "business" reasons up 10% and 9%
respectively.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by
12% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji
down 12% and to the United States up 4%. Travel to the United
Kingdom fell by 11% in the month of January, with departures to China
up 26% and to the Cook Islands and Thailand up 29% and 22%
respectively. New Zealand travel to Samoa declined by 8% with
departures to India and Hong Kong up 8% and 53%
respectively.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", rose by 8% in the month of January 2006, with
departures to Asia up 35% and to North America and the "other"
South Pacific Islands up 40% and 26% respectively. Travel to Europe for
"holiday" reasons grew by just 2% in the month under review,
with departures to Fiji down 23%. "Holiday" travel to
the "other" Americas increased by 24% in January, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 3%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 808,855 in
the year ended January 2006 - up 6% on the January year 2005.
