NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
DOWN 2% IN FEBRUARY 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents declined by more
than 2,200 trips or 2% in the month of February 2006.
"Holiday" and "VFR" travel fell by 2% and 5%
respectively, with departures for "business" reasons up 2%. In
total, New Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.88 million in the
year ended February 2006 - up by 118,902 departures or 7% - on the same
twelve month period of the previous year. "Holiday" travel was
up 6% with departures for "VFR" and "business"
reasons up 9%.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia declined by
5% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji
up 12% and to the United States down 11%. Travel to the United
Kingdom remained unchanged in the month of February, with departures
to China down 4% and to the Cook Islands and Thailand
up 41% and 70% respectively. New Zealand travel to Samoa
increased by 29% with departures to India and Hong Kong up
6% and 4% respectively.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", fell by 8% in the month of February 2006, with
departures to Asia up 2% and to North America and the "other"
South Pacific Islands up 18% and 17% respectively. Travel to Europe for
"holiday" reasons declined by 3% in the month under review,
with departures to Fiji up 10%. "Holiday" travel to the
"other" Americas increased by 160% in February, with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 36%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 808,127 in
the year ended February 2006 - up 6% on the February year 2005.
