NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 1% IN DECEMBER 2006
Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 2,489 trips or 1%
in the month of December 2006. "Holiday" travel fell by 3%,
with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up
5% and 9% respectively. In total, New Zealand overseas travel was
recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended December 2006 - down by more
than 6,700 departures or 0.4% - on the same twelve month period of the
previous year. "Holiday" travel declined by 3% in the 2006
calendar year, with departures for "VFR" and
"business" reasons up 2%.
By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005
calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 1% in the
month under review, with departures to Fiji down 28% and to the United
States up 3%. Travel to the United Kingdom declined by 1% in the month
of December, with departures to China unchanged and to the Cook Islands
down 5%. New Zealand travel to Thailand also fell by 5% in the month of
December, with departures to Samoa up 29% and travel to India and Hong
Kong up 71% and 29% respectively.
New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of
main destination", increased by 2% in the month of December 2006,
with departures to North America and Fiji down 18% and 37% respectively.
Travel to Asia for "holiday" reasons rose by 7% in the month
under review, with departures to Europe up 16% and to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 9%. "Holiday"
travel to the "other" Americas declined by 9% in December,
with departures to Africa and the Middle East down 3%. Total overseas
departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 783,984 in
the 2006 calendar year - down 3% on the year ended December 2005.
