NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
DOWN 5% IN AUGUST 2006


Overseas travel by New Zealand residents declined by a further 8,000 trips or 5% in the month of August 2006. "Holiday" travel fell by 8%, with departures for "VFR" reasons up 4% and "business" travel down 5%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.86 million in the year ended August 2006 - up by 20,695 departures or 1% - on the same twelve month period of the previous year. "Holiday" travel fell by less than 1% in the 2006 August year, with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 4%.


By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2005 calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia declined by 12% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji up 2% and to the United States also up 2%. Travel to the United Kingdom increased 17% in the month of August, with departures to China up 19% and to the Cook Islands up 6%. New Zealand travel to Thailand was unchanged for the second consecutive month in August, with departures to Samoa up 23% and to India and Hong Kong up 13% and 9% respectively.


New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of main destination", fell by 18% in the month of August 2006, with departures to North America and Asia down 9% and 1% respectively. Travel to Europe for "holiday" reasons increased by 25% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 7% and to the "other" South Pacific Islands up 25%. "Holiday" travel to the "other" Americas rose by 186% in August, with departures to Africa and the Middle East up 52%. Total overseas departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 788,796 in the year ended August 2006 - down by less than 1% on the August year 2005.
