NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP BY JUST 0.5% IN APRIL 2007

Overseas travel by New Zealand residents increased by 856 trips or 0.5% in the month of April 2007. "Holiday" travel increased by 1%, with departures for "VFR" reasons down 4% and "business" travel up 7%. In total, New Zealand overseas travel was recorded at 1.88 million in the year ended April 2007 - up by 10,300 departures or 0.6% - on the same twelve month period of the previous year. "Holiday" travel declined by 1% in the year ended April 2007, with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 2% and 3% respectively.

By top ten "countries of main destination" (in the 2006 calendar year), New Zealand travel to Australia increased by 1% in the month under review, with departures to Fiji down 3% and to the United Kingdom down 17%. Travel to the United States rose by just 0.2% in the month of April, with departures to China up 30% and to the Cook Islands and Samoa up 18%. New Zealand travel to Thailand fell by 4% in the month of April, with departures to India up 14% and to Hong Kong down 19%.

New Zealand "holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of main destination", increased by 3% in the month of April 2007, with departures to Asia and Fiji up 4%. Travel to Europe for "holiday" reasons declined by 8% in the month under review, with departures to North America down 14% and to the "other" South Pacific Islands up 7%. "Holiday" travel to the "other" Americas increased by 4% in April, with departures to Africa and the Middle East down 3%. Total overseas departures for "holiday" reasons were recorded at 791,467 in the year ended April 2007 - down 1% on the year ended April 2006.
