ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 8% IN CALENDAR YEAR 2005
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 2005 was recorded
at 1.87 million - up by nearly 138,000 departures or 8% compared
with the calendar year 2004. "Holiday" travel increased by 6%,
with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up
11% and 9% respectively; those residents travelling overseas for
"other" reasons grew by 4% in the twelve month period under
review.
"Holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of main
destination", increased by 3% in the 2005 calendar year, with
departures to Asia up 11% and to Fiji and Europe up 10% and 9%
respectively. Travel to North America for "holiday"
reasons rose by 18%, with departures to the "other" South
Pacific Islands up 13%; "holiday" travel to the
"other" Americas increased by 20% in the twelve months under
review with departures to Africa and the Middle East up 36%.
 
Within the top ten "countries of
main destination", total departures for all reasons to Australia
increased by 7% in the 2005 calendar year, with travel to Fiji
up 10% and to the United States and the United Kingdom up
13% and 11% respectively. Departures to China grew by 10%, with
travel to the Cook Islands up 31% and to Thailand up 16%.
Total New Zealand travel to Samoa rose by 27% in the twelve month
period, with departures to India up 23% and to Hong Kong up
4%.
