ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 26% IN CALENDAR YEAR 2004
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 2004 was recorded
at 1.73 million - up by nearly 357,000 departures or 26% compared
with the calendar year 2003. "Holiday" travel increased by 27%,
with departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up
25% and 20% respectively; those residents travelling overseas for
"other" reasons grew by 41% in the twelve month period under
review.
"Holiday" travel to Fiji, as "area of main
destination", increased by 44% in the 2004 calendar year, with
departures to Asia up 32% and to Australia and Europe up 26% and 25%
respectively. Travel to North America for "holiday"
reasons rose by 21%, with departures to the "other" South
Pacific Islands up 24%; "holiday" travel to the
"other" Americas increased by 14% in the twelve months under
review with departures to Africa and the Middle East up 28%.
 
Within the top ten "countries of
main destination", total departures for all reasons to Australia
increased by 24% in the 2004 calendar year, with travel to Fiji
up 40% and to the United States and the United Kingdom up
22% and 20% respectively. Departures to China rose by 38%, with
travel to the Cook Islands up 29% and to Thailand up 40%.
Total New Zealand travel to Samoa grew by 27% in the twelve month
period, with departures to Japan up 19% and to Hong Kong up
21%.
