OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 6% IN CALENDAR YEAR 2003
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 2003 was recorded
at 1.37 million - up by nearly 81,000 departures or 6% compared with
the year 2002. "Holiday" travel increased by 9%, with departures
for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 8% and 1%
respectively; those residents travelling overseas for "other"
reasons fell by 1% in the twelve month period under review.
"Holiday" travel to Australia, as "area of main
destination", increased by 12% in the 2003 calendar year, with
departures to Fiji up 3% and to North America and Europe up 16% and 5%
respectively. Travel to Asia for "holiday" reasons
declined by 9%, with departures to the "other" South Pacific
Islands up 9%; "holiday" travel to the "other"
Americas increased by 44% in the twelve months under review with
departures to Africa and the Middle East down 4%.
 
Within the top ten "countries of
main destination" in the 2003 calendar year, total departures for all
reasons to Australia increased by 9%, with travel to Fiji up
6% and to the United States down 2% and the United Kingdom
up 0.2%. Departures to China rose by 10%, with travel to the Cook
Islands up 5% and to Samoa up 12%. Total New Zealand
travel to Thailand fell by 6% in the twelve month period, with
departures to Japan down 9% and to Hong Kong down 19%.
