NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 0.5% IN CALENDAR YEAR 2002
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 2002 was recorded
at 1,292,979 - up by just 6,386 departures or 0.5% compared with the
calendar year 2001. "Holiday" travel increased by 2%, with
"VFR" departures up 0.7% and "business" travel down
3%; those residents travelling overseas for "other" reasons rose
by 0.4% .
"Holiday" travel to Fiji, as
"country/area of main destination", increased by 5% in the
twelve month period, with departures to Asia down 1% and to North America
and Europe up 2%. Travel to Australia for "holiday"
reasons rose by just 0.1%, with departures to the "other" South
Pacific Islands up 1%; "holiday" travel to Africa and the
Middle East grew by 19% in the 2002 calendar year with departures to the
"other" Americas up 13%.



Within the top ten "countries of main destination" in the 2002
calendar year, total departures for all reasons to Australia
fell by 4%, with travel to the United States up 2% and to Fiji up
6%. Departures to the United Kingdom increased by 7%, with
departures to China up 51% and to the Cook Islands up 20%.
Total New Zealand travel to Japan rose by 1% in
the twelve month period, with departures to Hong Kong down 2% and
to Thailand and Indonesia down 6% and 9% respectively.
