NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 0.3% IN CALENDAR YEAR 2001
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 2001 was recorded
at 1,286,593 - up 3,844 departures or 0.3% compared with the calendar year
2000 result. "Holiday" travel declined by 4% with "VFR"
departures up 0.5% and "business" travel down 0.3%; those
residents travelling overseas for "other" reasons increased by
25% .
"Holiday" travel to Australia, as "area
of main destination", fell by 5% in the twelve month period, with
departures to Asia down 3% and to North America and Europe down 32% and
17% respectively. Travel to Fiji for "holiday" reasons
increased by 39%, with departures to the "other" South Pacific
Islands down 6%; "holiday" travel to Africa and the Middle
East declined by 8% in the 2001 calendar year with departures to the
"other" Americas down 12%.



Within the top ten "countries of main destination" in the 2001
calendar year, total departures for all reasons to Australia
fell by 1%, with travel to the United States down 16% and to the United
Kingdom down 13%. Departures to Fiji increased by 36%,
with departures to China up 31% and to the Cook Islands up
6%.
Total New Zealand travel to Thailand rose by 3%
in the twelve month period, with departures to Japan up 8% and to Hong
Kong and Indonesia down 13% and 1% respectively.
