NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 8% IN CALENDAR YEAR 2000
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 2000 was recorded
at 1,282,749 - up 98,239 departures or 8% compared with the calendar year
1999 result. "Holiday" travel increased by 2% with "VFR"
and "business" departures up 12% and 9% respectively; those
residents travelling overseas for "other" reasons increased by
38% .
"Holiday" travel to Australia and Asia, as
"areas of main destination", rose by 6% in the twelve month
period, with departures to Europe down 1% and to North America down 6%.
Travel to Fiji for "holiday" reasons declined by 36%, with
departures to the "other" South Pacific Islands up 16%;
"holiday" travel to Africa and the Middle East grew by 5% in the
2000 calendar year with departures to the "other" Americas down
18%.



Within the top ten "countries of main destination" in the 2000
calendar year, total departures for all reasons to Australia
increased by 11%, with travel to the United States up 2% and to Hong
Kong up 6%. Departures to the United Kingdom declined by
3%, with departures to Fiji down 33% and to the Cook Islands
up 36%.
Total New Zealand travel to Thailand rose by 34%
in the twelve month period, with departures to Singapore up 10% and
to Taiwan and Indonesia down 4% and 9% respectively.
