NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 2% IN CALENDAR YEAR 1999
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 1999 was recorded
at 1,184,510 - up 18,092 departures or 2% compared with the calendar year
1998 result. "Holiday" travel fell by 1% with "VFR"
and "business" departures up 2% and 6% respectively; those
residents travelling overseas for "other" reasons increased by
2% .
"Holiday" travel to Australia, as "area
of main destination", declined by 2% in the twelve month period, with
departures to Asia down 6% and to North America down 3%. Travel to
Fiji for "holiday" reasons grew by 1%, with departures to the
"other" South Pacific Islands up 6% and to Europe up 4%;
"holiday" travel to Africa and the Middle East fell by 5% in the
1999 calendar year with departures to the "other" Americas up
26%.



Within the top ten "countries of main destination" in the 1999
calendar year, total departures for all reasons to Australia
rose by just 0.5%, with travel to the United Kingdom up 5% and to Fiji
up 4%. Departures to the United States declined by 3%, with
departures to Hong Kong down 19% and to Indonesia down 6%.
Total New Zealand travel to Samoa increased by
16% in the twelve month period, with departures to Singapore up 9%
and to Taiwan and Japan down 2% and 9% respectively.
