NEW ZEALAND OVERSEAS TRAVEL
UP 3% IN CALENDAR YEAR 1998
Total New Zealand overseas travel in the calendar year 1998 was recorded
at 1,166,418 - up 34,736 departures or 3% compared with the calendar year
1997 result. "Holiday" travel fell by 1% with "VFR"
and "business" departures up 9% and 2% respectively; those
residents travelling overseas for "other" reasons increased by
15% .
"Holiday" travel to North America, as
"area of main destination", declined by 22% in the twelve month
period, with departures to Australia down 0.5% and to the
"other" South Pacific Islands down 9%. Travel to Asia for
"holiday" reasons rose by 11%, with departures to Fiji up 4% and
to Europe up 1%; "holiday" travel to Africa and the Middle
East grew by 4% in the 1998 calendar year with departures to the
"other" Americas up 5%.



Within the top ten "countries of main destination" in the 1998
calendar year, total departures for all reasons to Australia
rose by 3%, with travel to Fiji up 2% and to the United Kingdom
up 4%. Departures to the United States declined by 8%, with
departures to Hong Kong down 5% and to Japan down 9%.
Total New Zealand travel to Indonesia recorded no
change in the twelve month period, with departures to Samoa down 3%
and to Taiwan and Singapore up 7% and 6% respectively.
