The Wellington/Manawatu &
Wanganui Travel Market

In the year ended March 2007, the Wellington/Manawatu & Wanganui market (comprising the urban centres of
Central Wellington, Lower Hutt, Palmerston North, Porirua, Wanganui and
Upper Hutt) accounted for 17% of New Zealand's total population of 4.2 million but
a below average 15% of all overseas travel departures.
In the same twelve month
period, a total of 289,100 residents of the Wellington/M/W region
departed on overseas trips representing 1
overseas trip per 2.4 head of population. This
compared with the national average ratio of 1 overseas trip per 2.2 head
of population.
In the year ended March
2007, the Wellington/M/W resident was slightly more likely to travel overseas on
"holiday" at 43% of all departures than the national average of 42%. On the other hand, the
Wellington/M/W traveller
was less likely to travel overseas for "VFR" reasons at 30% than the national average of
31% and more likely to travel overseas for "business" at 20%
than the national average of 19%.
In the twelve
month period ended March
2007, 52% of Wellington/M/W overseas departures were bound for
Australia as their "area of main destination" (compared with
the national average of 50%), with 11%
leaving for Asia and 10% for Europe. Just 4% of all
Wellington/M/W overseas
travellers were heading for Fiji in the twelve month period under review
with 6% bound for the "other" South Pacific Islands.
WELLINGTON/M/W TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA
In the year ended March 2007, total Wellington/M/W departures to Australia, as "area
of main destination", declined by 2% with "holiday" and "VFR"
travel down 3% and 4% respectively and departures for "business"
reasons down 0.4%. The Wellington/M/W share of total New Zealand travel to
Australia in the twelve month period was recorded at 16%.

TRAVEL TO ASIA
Total
departures to Asia from the Wellington/M/W market increased by 7% in the year
ended March 2007, with "holiday" travel up 19% and departures for
"VFR" reasons up 13%, while "business" travel fell by
15%. The Wellington/M/W share of total New
Zealand travel to Asia in the twelve month period was recorded at 14%.

TRAVEL TO EUROPE
Wellington/M/W travel to
Europe, in the year ended March 2007, rose by 11%
with "holiday" and "VFR" departures up 20% and 13%
respectively and "business" travel up 2%. The

share of total New Zealand travel to Europe in the twelve months ended
March 2007 was recorded at 19%.

TRAVEL TO NORTH AMERICA
Total
departures to North America from the Wellington/M/W market
declined by just 0.4% in the twelve month period under review, with "holiday"
and "VFR" travel down 1% and 12% respectively and
departures for "business" reasons up 11%. The
Wellington/M/W share of total New
Zealand travel to North America in the year ended March 2007 was recorded
at 16%.
WELLINGTON/M/W TRAVEL TO FIJI
The
Wellington/M/W market travel to
Fiji fell by 13% in the year ended March 2007, with "holiday"
and "business" departures
down 18% and 10% respectively, while "VFR" travel increased by
24%. The Wellington/M/W
share of total New Zealand travel to Fiji in the twelve month period under
review was recorded at 12%.
WELLINGTON/M/W TRAVEL TO THE OTHER SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS
In the year ended March 2007, total Wellington/M/W departures to the "other"
South Pacific Islands, as "area of main destination",
increased by 12% with "holiday" travel up 23% and "VFR" and
"business" travel down 2% and 1% respectively. The

Islands in the twelve month period ended March 2007 was recorded at 13%.
