In the year ended March 2007, the Nelson/Marlborough/Westland market (comprising the
main urban centres of Nelson, Blenheim and Greymouth) accounted for 4% of New Zealand's total population of 4.2 million but
a below average 2.6% of all overseas travel departures.
In the twelve month period under review, a total of 48,944 residents of the
Nelson/Marlborough/Westland region
departed on overseas trips, representing 1
overseas trip per 3.4 head of population. This
compared with the national average ratio of 1 overseas trip per 2.2 head
of population placing Nelson/Marlborough/Westland in sixth place for overseas travel penetration of its market population .
In the year ended March
2007, the Nelson/Marlborough/Westland resident was
more likely to travel overseas on
"holiday" at 47% of all departures, than the national average of 42%. On the other hand, the

was much less likely to travel overseas for "business" reasons at
14% than the national average of 19%.

In the year ended March 2007, total Nelson/Marlborough/Westland departures to Australia, as "area
of main destination", increased by 3% with "holiday" travel
up 1% and departures for "VFR" and "business"
reasons up 3% and 8% respectively. The Nelson/Marlborough/ Westland share of total New Zealand travel to
Australia in the twelve month period was recorded at just over 3%.

Total
departures to Asia from the Nelson/Marlborough/Westland market increased by
7% in the year
ended March 2007, with "VFR" travel down 4% and departures for
"holiday" and "business" reasons up 6% and 9%

Zealand travel to Asia in the twelve month period was recorded at less
than 2%.

Total
departures to Europe from the Nelson/Marlborough/Westland market
declined by 9% in the year
ended March 2007, with "holiday" and "VFR" travel down 14% and
2% respectively and departures for "business" reasons up 21%. The

Zealand travel to Europe in the twelve month period was recorded at 3%.

TRAVEL TO NORTH AMERICA
Total
departures to North America from the Nelson/Marlborough/Westland market
fell by 8% in the twelve months ended March 2007, with "holiday"
and "VFR" travel down 10% and 35% respectively and departures for "business"

Zealand travel to North America in the year ended March 2007 was recorded
at 3%.

Fiji declined by 30% in the year ended March 2007, with "holiday"
and "business" departures
down 30% and 66% respectively and "VFR" travel up 28%. The
Nelson/Marlborough/Westland share of total New Zealand travel to Fiji in the twelve month period under
review was recorded at less than 2%.

TRAVEL TO THE OTHER
SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS
In the year ended March 2007, total Nelson/Marlborough/Westland departures to the "other"
South Pacific Islands, as "area of main destination",
declined by 3% with "holiday" travel down 7% and departures for
"VFR" and "business" reasons up 15% and 14%

over 2%.
