The Canterbury Travel Market

In the year ended March 2007, the Canterbury market (comprising the urban
centre of Christchurch) accounted for 13% of New Zealand's total population of 4.2 million but
a below average 12% of all overseas travel departures.
In the same twelve month
period, a total of 229,200 residents of the Canterbury region
departed on overseas trips representing 1
overseas trip per 2.4 head of population. This
compared with the national average ratio of 1 overseas trip per 2.2 head
of population.
In the year ended March
2007, the Canterbury resident was
more likely to travel overseas on
"holiday" at 49% of all departures, than the national average of 42%. On the other hand, the
Canterbury traveller
was much less likely to travel overseas for "business" reasons at
16% than the national average of 19%.
In the year ended March
2007, 60% of all Canterbury overseas departures were bound for
Australia as their "area of main destination" (compared with
the national average of 50%), with 11%
leaving for Asia and 9% for Europe. 5% of all
Canterbury overseas
travellers were bound for North America in the twelve month period under review
with 4% heading for Fiji and 4% the "other" South Pacific Islands.
CANTERBURY TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA
In the year ended March 2007, total Canterbury departures to Australia, as "area
of main destination", fell by 3% with "holiday" and "VFR"
travel down 4% and 2% respectively, and departures for "business"
reasons up 2%. The Canterbury share of total New Zealand travel to
Australia in the twelve month period was recorded at 15%.
CANTERBURY
TRAVEL TO ASIA
Total
departures to Asia from the Canterbury market declined by 6% in the year
ended March 2007, with "holiday" travel down by just 0.1% and departures for
"VFR" and "business" reasons down 8% and 15%
respectively. The Canterbury share of total New
Zealand travel to Asia in the twelve month period was recorded at 11%.
CANTERBURY
TRAVEL TO EUROPE
Canterbury travel to
Europe, in the year ended March 2007, fell by 1%
with "holiday" travel down 10% and departures for "VFR"
and "business" reasons up 2% and 9% respectively. The Canterbury
share of total New Zealand travel to Europe in the twelve months ended
March 2007 was recorded at 6%.

TRAVEL TO NORTH AMERICA
Total
departures to North America from the Canterbury market declined by
15% in the twelve month period under review, with "holiday"
and "VFR" travel down 11% and
departures for "business" reasons down 21%. The Canterbury
share of total New
Zealand travel to North America in the year ended March 2007 was recorded
at 10%.
CANTERBURY
TRAVEL TO FIJI
Canterbury market travel to
Fiji fell by 21% in the year ended March 2007, with "holiday" departures
down 23% and departures for "VFR"
and "business" reasons down 1% and 17% respectively. The
Canterbury share of total New Zealand travel to Fiji in the twelve month period under
review was recorded at 8%.
CANTERBURY
TRAVEL TO THE OTHER SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS
In the year ended March 2007, total Canterbury departures to the "other"
South Pacific Islands, as "area of main destination",
declined by 8% with "holiday" and "VFR" travel
down 12% and 3% respectively and
"business" departures up 46%. The Canterbury share of total New Zealand travel to the "other" South Pacific
Islands in the twelve month period ended March 2007 was recorded at 8%.
