The Central Auckland Travel Market

In the year ended March 2007, the Central Auckland market (comprising the major cities of Auckland, Manukau, North Shore and Waitakere) accounted for 32% of New Zealand's total population of 4.2 million but an above average 45% of all overseas travel departures.  

In the same twelve month period, a total of 837,000 residents of the Central Auckland region departed on overseas trips representing 1 overseas trip per 1.6 head of population. This compared with the national average ratio of 1 overseas trip per 2.2 head of population.  

In the year ended March 2007, the Central Auckland resident was less likely to travel overseas on "holiday" at 38% of all departures, than the national average of 42%.  On the other hand, the Aucklander was slightly more likely to travel overseas for "VFR" reasons at 32% than the national average of 31% and much more likely to travel on "business" at 22%, than the national average of 19%.

In the year ended March 2007, 44% of Central Auckland overseas departures were bound for Australia as their "area of main destination", with 16% leaving for Asia and 8% Europe.  7% of the region's overseas travellers were bound for Fiji in the twelve month period and 8% heading to "other" South Pacific Islands. 
 


CENTRAL AUCKLAND TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA


In the year ended March 2007, total departures to Australia, as "area of main destination", grew by 3% with "holiday" travel down 0.3% and "VFR" and "business" travel up 2% and 6% respectively.  The Auckland share of total New Zealand travel to Australia in the twelve month period was recorded at 39% - up by one percentage point on the year ended March 2006 ratio.


CENTRAL AUCKLAND TRAVEL TO ASIA

Total departures to Asia from the Central Auckland market increased by 2% in the twelve month period under review, with "holiday" and "business" travel down 2% and 1% respectively and departures for "VFR" reasons up 5%.  The Auckland share of total New Zealand travel to Asia in the year ended March 2007 was recorded at 56% - marginally down on the March year 2006.


CENTRAL AUCKLAND TRAVEL TO EUROPE


Central Auckland travel to Europe, in the year ended March 2007, increased by 9% with "holiday" departures up 7% and departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 13% and 8% respectively. The Auckland share of total New Zealand travel to Europe in the twelve months ended March 2007 was recorded at 39% - up one percentage point on the year ended March 2006.


CENTRAL AUCKLAND TRAVEL TO NORTH AMERICA


Total departures to North America from the Central Auckland market declined by 6% in the twelve month period under review, with "holiday" travel down 12% and and "VFR" departures unchanged with "business" travel up 8%.  The Auckland share of total New Zealand travel to North America in the year ended March 2007 was recorded at 44% - down by more than one percentage point on the March year 2006.


CENTRAL AUCKLAND TRAVEL TO FIJI


The Central Auckland market's travel to Fiji, in the year ended March 2007, increased by 10% with "holiday" departures up 7% and departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 24% and 2% respectively. The Auckland share of total New Zealand travel to Fiji in the twelve months ended March 2007 was recorded at 55% - up by six percentage points on the year ended March 2006.


CENTRAL AUCKLAND TRAVEL TO THE OTHER SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS

In the year ended March 2007, total departures to the "other" South Pacific Islands, as "area of main destination", rose by 17% with "holiday" travel up 26% and "VFR" and "business" travel up 9% and 7% respectively.  The Auckland share of total New Zealand travel to the "other" South Pacific Islands in the twelve month period was recorded at 53% - up by one percentage point on the year ended March 2006.
