The Waikato/Bay of Plenty Travel Market

In the year ended March 2007, the Waikato/Bay of Plenty market (comprising the urban centres of Hamilton, Rotorua and Tauranga) accounted for 16% of New Zealand's total population of 4.2 million but a below average 11% of all overseas travel departures.  

In the same twelve month period, a total of 213,500 residents of the Waikato/BoP region departed on overseas trips representing 1 overseas trip per 3.1 head of population. This compared with the national average ratio of 1 overseas trip per 2.2 head of population.  

In the year ended March 2007, the Waikato/BoP resident was more likely to travel overseas on "holiday" at 46% of all departures, , than the national average of 42%.  On the other hand, the Waikato/BoP traveller was much less likely to travel overseas for "business" reasons at 15% than the national average of 19%.


In the year ended March 2007, 53% of Waikato/BoP overseas departures were bound for Australia as their "area of main destination" (compared with the national average of 50%), with 10% leaving for Asia and 9% for Europe.  6% of all Waikato/BoP overseas travellers were bound for Fiji in the twelve month period under review with 7% heading for the "other" South Pacific Islands.  



WAIKATO/BoP TRAVEL TO AUSTRALIA


In the year ended March 2007, total Waikato/BoP departures to Australia, as "area of main destination", fell by 3% with "holiday" and "VFR" travel down 8% and 2% respectively, with departures for "business" reasons up 4%.  The Waikato/BoP share of total New Zealand travel to Australia in the twelve month period was recorded at 12%.


WAIKATO/BoP TRAVEL TO ASIA


Total departures to Asia from the Waikato/BoP market increased by 8% in the year ended March 2007, with "holiday" travel up 17% and departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 0.1% and 6% respectively.  The Waikato/BoP share of total New Zealand travel to Asia in the twelve month period was recorded at 9%.


WAIKATO/BoP TRAVEL TO EUROPE



Waikato/BoP travel to Europe, in the year ended March 2007, declined by 2% with "VFR" departures down 8% and departures for "holiday" and "business" reasons up 1% and 22% respectively. The Waikato/BoP share of total New Zealand travel to Europe in the twelve months ended March 2007 was recorded at 11%.


WAIKATO/BoP TRAVEL TO NORTH AMERICA



Total departures to North America from the Waikato/BoP market fell by 1% in the twelve month period under review, with "holiday" and "business" travel down 14% and 4% respectively and departures for "VFR" reasons up 16%.  The Waikato/BoP share of total New Zealand travel to North America in the year ended March 2007 was recorded at 12%.


WAIKATO/BoP TRAVEL TO FIJI



The Waikato/BoP market's travel to Fiji declined by 9% in the year ended march 2007, with "holiday" departures down 14% and departures for "VFR" and "business" reasons up 24% and 27% respectively. The Waikato/BoP share of total New Zealand travel to Fiji in the twelve month period under review was recorded at 12%.


WAIKATO/BoP TRAVEL TO THE OTHER SOUTH PACIFIC ISLANDS

In the year ended March 2007, total Waikato/BoP departures to the "other" South Pacific Islands, as "area of main destination", increased by 29% with "holiday" travel up 29% and "VFR" and "business" travel up 19% and 11% respectively.  The Waikato/BoP share of total New Zealand travel to the "other" South Pacific Islands in the twelve month period ended March 2007 was recorded at 12%.
