by Alasdair McIntyre, 12th September 2007

In the year ended March 2007, the 60 years and over age group accounted for 16.7% of the total New Zealand population of 4.2 million - up from a 15.2% share in 1997.  In numerical terms, this market segment has grown by 20% over the past ten years.

In the twelve month period under review, a total of 126,760 residents in the 60 years and over age group departed overseas on "holiday" trips - up 7.5% on the year ended March 2006, and representing a below average 16% of the total outbound "holiday" market.

Thus the 60 years and over age group possesses a slightly below average travel penetration at 1 overseas holiday trip per 5.4 head of population. This compared with the national average ratio of 1 overseas holiday trip per 5.2 head of population.

In the year ended March 2007, 54% of all 60 years and over of age overseas "holiday" departures were bound for Australia as their "area of main destination" (compared with the national average of 50%), while 10% were headed for Europe and 6% for Asia. 5% of the 60 years and over group were bound for North America, with 6% leaving for Fiji and 9% for the "other" South Pacific Islands.
