by Alasdair McIntyre, 18th September 2007

In the year ended March 2007, the 20 to 29 years  age group accounted for 13.3% of the total New Zealand population of 4.2 million - down from a 15.1% share in 1997.  In numerical terms, this market segment has fallen by more than 3% in the past ten years.

In the twelve month period under review, a total of 104,941 residents in the 20 to 29 years  age group departed overseas on "holiday" trips - down 4.5% on the year ended March 2006, and representing a 13% share of the total outbound "holiday" market.

Thus the 20 to 29 years age group possesses an average travel penetration at 1 overseas holiday trip per 5.2 head of population equating with the national average ratio of 1 overseas holiday trip per 5.2 head of population.

In the year ended March 2007, 44% of all 20 to 29 years  of age overseas "holiday" departures were bound for Australia as their "area of main destination" (compared with the national average of 50%), while 20% were headed for Asia and 7% for Europe. 5% of all 20 to 29 year "holiday" departures were bound for North America, with 7% leaving for Fiji and 9% for the "other" South Pacific Islands.
