The Under 15 Years Age Group Holiday Travel Market
by Alasdair McIntyre, 6th September 2007

In the year ended March 2007, the under 15 years age group accounted for 21.3% of the total New Zealand population of 4.2 million - down from a 23% share in 1997.  In numerical terms, this market segment has grown by only 1.2% over the past ten years.

In the twelve month period under review, a total of 99,837 residents in the under 15 years age group departed overseas on "holiday" trips - down 6% on the year ended March 2006, and representing a below average 12.6% of the total outbound "holiday" market.

Thus the under 15 years age group possesses the lowest travel penetration of all age groups at 1 overseas holiday trip per 8.8 head of population. This compares with the national average ratio of 1 overseas holiday trip per 5.2 head of population.

However, while the population base of the under 15 years group has grown by just 1% in the past ten years, the holiday travel penetration has improved markedly from a ratio of 1 overseas holiday trip per 14.8 head of population in the year ended March 1997.  This has enabled the group to achieve a 71% increase in "holiday" departures in the ten year period, compared with the national average growth rate of 46%.

In the year ended March 2007, 53% of all under 15 years of age overseas "holiday" departures were bound for Australia as their "area of main destination" (compared with the national average of 50%), while 4% were headed for Europe and 7% for Asia. 4% of the under 15 years group were bound for North America, with 14% leaving for Fiji and 10% for the "other" South Pacific Islands.
